When the American Society of Hematology featured Michael Hallek in its journal ASH Clinical News under the title ‘From Veins to Vines’ featured, it captured the essence of Château Le Pin Beausoleil: the story of a world-renowned doctor and scientist, who in the vineyards of the Médoc found a second vocation .

For more than two decades Michael Hallek has pursued an outstanding career in the fields of haematology and oncology at the University in Cologne combined with a passion for organic viticulture in Bordeaux . What began as a bold adventure has, has become an essential part of his life has become — and of the life of the winery.

From Guillain-Barré to a new beginning

The path to winemaking was not a straightforward one. A serious illness — Guillain–Barré syndrome — and the subsequent recovery made him to the transience of life in a profound way to reflect. Together with a favourable financial opportunity following his exit from a biotechnology company the decision was made: Le Pin Beausoleil was to become a reality .

This personal turning point is woven into every vintage. The acquired winery in 2004 has since then produced twenty vintages under the management of Michael and Ingrid Hallek produced — each and every one shaped by the same patience, modesty and the respect for the nature, which have determined this path from the very beginning.

"Prevention of burnout"

In an ASH Clinical News interview, Michael Hallek describes wine-making as his “anti-burnout strategy” — a source of balance, which gives him amidst the demands of clinical practice and research. Working in the vineyard, he says, teaches patience in a certain way, just as it medicine rarely is able to.
The parallels between the two worlds are striking. Both involve setbacks. Both call for humility in the face of forces greater than oneself. Neither brings immediate success. And in both, the rewards come not from rushing the process, but from trusting it
